Moment for Mission: International Literacy Day

In Guatemala, the Francisco Coll School was constructed in a landfill amongst shelters built by families trying to make ends meet by searching through the dump. With the support of Presbyterian World Service & Development, Francisco Coll is providing vulnerable boys and girls with a proper education in a secure environment. One student, Patricia Benavides, has recently graduated with an accounting certificate and plans to pursue a career as a public accountant or an auditor. In a letter thanking PWS&D for its support she says, “You will be always in my prayers and I will remember that thanks to you I am a girl who finished her studies. Please know that you have changed the life of this young woman.”

REMINDER: There is a Session meeting on Tuesday, September 8th at 6:30 p.m.

THEY’RE HERE! The new windows have been installed in the kitchen and new door in the basement. Also, thanks to a private anonymous donation, new windows have also been installed in the Pastor’s Office. Check out how bright it is in the kitchen and office now! And we can open them!  Let’s give God thanks for the generous donations to our memorial fund so that we can make these necessary updates.

After the service, everyone is invited for Ice Cream Sundaes. What a way to celebrate new beginnings!

COMING SOON: How to Read the Bible for Understanding, Tuesday, September 15. Choose from one of these two times: 1:30-3:30 pm or 7:00-9:00 pm. Pastor Janine will show you two different methods to read for understanding as well as a few other helpful hints. We will be practising what we learn that night. Invite a friend to come too!

COME AND JOIN OUR PRAISE TEAM! Raise your voice in thanks and praise to God. Singing builds confidence, reduces stress and anxiety, and raises endorphins. No kidding! So come out and see what a great time we have. No experience necessary! Practices are 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays starting September 10th.

Dessert and Movie: Tuesday, Oct. 27, 6:30-??. We’ll watch a movie with a Christian theme. (Not sure of the movie at present, but thinking it will be God’s Not Dead.) Stay tuned for more details.

Larson and director, Stephen Vidano, show us the evidence to help us understand the mysteries of the skies that surround the events of Jesus in this DVD. Date to be determined – but sometime in November. Stay tuned.

Men’s Breakfast: Scott Newton and Pastor Janine are teaming up to offer a men’s breakfast the first week of November. Details to be decided.

MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels program delivers affordable, nutritious meals to members of the community who are unable to prepare or shop for their own food. Volunteers are needed to deliver these meals. If you would like to volunteer or have any questions about the program, please call Nicole at (519) 332-6380. Thank you

Rhubarb Donations: If you, or someone you know, might have rhubarb that you are not using, please let us know. We would use it for some fundraising in the fall. Thanks! – Patti and Brad

REMINDER: Just a reminder to make sure all doors are locked and lights and fans are shut off before you leave, especially if you are one of the last people in the building. It is better to take the initiative to turn things off or lock doors than to wait for someone else to do it. Thanks for your help with this.

The bus will leave the Paterson Memorial parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and travel to Coyle’s General Store (near Tilsonburg) for an hour. We will then go to the theatre for a buffet lunch and show called “An East Coast Kitchen Party.” The bus will return to Sarnia around dinner time. You and your family/friends are welcome to join us! Contact Marilyn Rawson at (519) 344-6360 or Elaine Heath at (519) 344-0412 to reserve your seat.

Coffee Fellowship Time: Anyone willing to do an occasional coffee fellowship time after church during the summer or September can sign up on the front hall bulletin board. The drip coffee maker can be used and coffee put in carafes, or the recipe for the urn is on the fridge. Cookies, sugar and coffee are kept in the trolley and individual creamers are in the fridge. Tea pots and bags are at the stove. We have a wonderful coffee team that will fill in the gaps.
TURKEY & BEEF PIES: The meat pie makers are pleased to report that $607.50 has been transferred to the Operations Account so far in 2015. Turkey pies are available, as well as some ground beef.

INN OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD DONATIONS: Mission and Outreach is urging everyone to continue supporting the Inn of the Good Shepherd Budget commitment. This cost is almost $100 a month. Any grocery donations on LLSM Communion Sunday's will be transferred to the Inn’s Food Bank. We thank you for your support.

FAIR TRADE COFFEE: Session has reaffirmed Laurel Lea St. Matthew’s commitment to use Fair Trade coffee at all functions. The Coffee Hour has Fair Trade coffee that groups can use and make donations to the Coffee Hour to replenish.

FUNERAL RECEPTIONS: We have come up with a new plan for providing funeral receptions. To put the plan into effect, Pastor Janine needs 4 people to serve a reception. She is compiling a list of people who would be willing to serve at the luncheons and will then rotate through the list so no one works all the time. That also allows for people close to the deceased to attend the funeral rather than work in the kitchen. Even if you can work on occasion, like Saturdays only, let her know and she will mark that on her sheet. In light of the upcoming service, she also needs to get that list compiled as soon as possible. We appreciate your willingness to help in this very important ministry.

PRESBYTERY CHURCH OF THE WEEK: The Presbytery has decided to pray for a different church in the Presbytery each week. First of all because each church has needs and second, it is a way we can show love and care for each other. The church of the week will be listed in the prayer calendar each Sunday so that you can remember to pray for the church at home. Pastor Janine will also attempt to remember to pray for the church each Sunday during the Prayer for God’s People.

Please make an effort to keep Pastor Janine or a session member aware of any pastoral care needs. Contact Pastor Janine at or (519)-491-7042 (Home) or (519)-402-3765 (Cell)

Pre-authorized Remittance Program for LLSM

In today’s age of electronic giving, the PAR program helps congregations receive the offering through automatic debit. Using the PAR program for offerings allows congregational members and adherents to give intentionally, proportionally and faithfully to the church, even when they are not able to be there in person. This helps provide the church with a dependable flow of contributions, makes budgeting easier and reduces paper work.

Costs for congregations are kept low by having The United Church of Canada administer the program. A congregation can sign up if they have only one donor who would like to give in this way. The cost is $0.50/donor each month with a monthly maximum of $45/month for a congregation.

What are the Advantages of the PAR Plan?

· Contributions can be regularly made even if the donor is away on business or vacation.

· Givers do not have to write a cheque or carry cash each week when they come to church.

· The church will receive contributions consistently, helping pay the bills even in months when many are away.

· It saves time and work for those who count and register the offerings each Sunday.

· Never again will donors have the frustration of getting halfway to church and then remembering that they forgot their offering!

If you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact Scott Newton at 519-332-5474 or email at
